Is Microneedling Painful: What You Should Know

If you find the right practitioner, it is not painful. Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that causes tiny punctures in your skin to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. It helps to improve your skin texture and tone and also minimizes the pore size, acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. Not only is it safe and effective, but it is FDA approved. Now let’s get back to the original question. Does microneedling hurt?

What to Expect During Microneedling

When you find an experienced practitioner like those at Goodless Dermatology, you can expect virtually no pain or discomfort.

Goodless Dermatology uses a device specifically designed to make micro-injuries in your skin. This creates tiny channels allowing serums and other ingredients to be infused more efficiently into your skin.

Everyone experiences pain differently. Some people may tell you that having microneedling feels like passing sandpaper over their skin. Others describe it differently.woman getting microneedling.

Goodless Dermatology uses numbing cream over the area to be treated, so you will feel virtually nothing. There are some areas that are prone to discomfort and those are your forehead, jawline, and hairline, as they are near bony areas.

We suggest you quit using retinol prior to the procedure along with anything else that might irritate your skin like an exfoliant.

What To Expect After Microneedling

You may feel a bit of tingling after the procedure.

You can expect some temporary side effects for a day or two. They include the following:

  • Swelling and redness
  • Skin flaking
  • Sun sensitivity

Our team will give you an individualized skin care guide for your aftercare.

What to Do and Avoid After Microneedling

Here are some general things to do and not do after the procedure:

  • Moisturize with a gentle type of cream. This will help with dry skin areas.
  • Rinse your face with lukewarm water about 8 hours after the treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure. Give your skin time to heal. Use hats, sunglasses, sunscreen when out in the sun for at least the first 72 hours.
  • Use a gentle cleanser 24 hours after the procedure. Do not use brushes, just gentle fingers.
  • Don’t apply any makeup for at least 24 hours. If you can go longer, do so.
  • No workouts or sweating for 24 hours.
  • Hydrate as much as possible. It helps with healing.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine.

You will see results in just a few weeks. Typical recommendations are 3 to 5 spaced out appointments to see final results.

There is no bad news as long as you see someone with experience. We can’t vouch for other clinics or practices.
